In the midst of the pandemic, we have all gotten used to staying indoors and getting our adventure fix through virtual experiences on our computer and phone screens. And while there's nothing wrong with that, it never really matches up to the real thing. The fresh air, the feeling of the breeze on your skin, and the warmth of the sun - these are just some of the things about the great outdoors that can never be replicated by watching a video while you're cuddled up on the couch. And here's the thing - you can self-isolate without drawing the blinds and staying home. If you are responsible and take all the necessary precautions, you can step outside for some much-needed outdoor activity.
Here's how you can keep the dreaded cabin fever at bay and enjoy the wonders of Mother Nature while keeping yourself and others safe.

Tip 1: Listen to the Official Guidelines
Once you're outside it's really important to take all the safety measures recommended by local governments and health officials. This means avoiding heavily populated areas and keeping your distance (at least six feet) if you encounter other adventurers. Carrying hand sanitizer is always a good idea too. Currently, there seems to be no compelling medical reason to wear a mask if you are maintaining proper social distancing, but masks have become a sign of solidarity during these times. So you might want to wear a mask around your neck, so you can pull it up when you're passing others.

Tip 2: Try Not to Wander Far from Home
These are uncertain times - you never know when there will be a closure because of new state and local mandates. Things might not always go according to plan. So staying close to your home is an easy way to avoid a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety. Try to stick to familiar places - a nearby park or trail, or perhaps even just a relaxing stroll around the block. That is usually enough for a welcome respite from long hours stuck indoors, and the fresh air and Vitamin D from the sun is a nice bonus as well!

Tip 3: Meeting Up with Friends is Probably Not a Good Idea
While it might be tempting to catch up with friends and neighbors, meeting with people from outside does defeat the purpose of the containment measures that have been put in place. Let's be honest - you can't really expect to keep a six-foot distance from your friends, even if you have the best intentions. The conversations would be too loud and you'd be more focused on making sure that you're six feet apart than you would be on enjoying their company. Now that's a recipe for awkward moments. So keep it limited to the people you live with and try to reduce touchpoints and exposure opportunities as much as possible - drive to the trail, have a good time, and head back home.

It might be more important than ever to go outside right now. The mental health benefits of some time spent amidst nature are very well known, and it never hurts to stay active and healthy. If you keep these useful tips in mind, there shouldn't be anything to worry about when you decide to step out and get some fresh air.
